The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) is the agency's attempt to see if it can ever-so-slightly adjust the velocity of an asteroid in orbit

Something that may seem insignificant at the time, but could have life-changing repercussions later in the future.

"The DART mission represents a critical milestone in our development of planetary defence capabilities,"

NASA's planetary defense chief Lindley Johnson told The Daily Beast. "It's just the first step."

The mere idea is that if a gigantic rock out there poses a species-annihilating, extinction-level threat to Earth, we could employ a gadget like DART

DART- uses dubbed a "kinetic impactor"—to nudge it out of our way.

There would be no need to sacrifice a covert US-Russian spacecraft in order to destroy the asteroid

In fact, this is the beginning of a functioning planetary defense system that could one day save our entire species from extinction.
