What is Artificial Intelligence?

what is artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence (A.I.) is a term that refers to a set of computer technologies that allow computer systems to perform functions that, in most cases, are considered to require intelligence when performed by humans. When we talk about artificial intelligence our mind begins to wander imagining robots and computers becoming self-aware and taking over the world like they do in many science fiction movies.

In reality, this is not a very likely scenario, but there are applications of AI that presently exist or are being developed which demonstrate how powerful the technology can be.

History Of Artificial Intelligence

The term Artificial Intelligence (AI) was coined in 1956 by John McCarthy. Initially, AI research consisted of Eastern European cyber physiologists who researched AI from the perspective of computer programming and attempted to use machines to simulate intelligence.

In the 60s and 70s, AI research took a blow as most experts believed that it was too difficult because they did not fully understand how to build machine capabilities.

In the 1980s, AI development started due to advances in computing and robotics. Governed by strict security restrictions, the defense industry led to many breakthroughs in intelligent weapons technology during this time. This is also when expert systems were introduced, which are programs that answer specific questions based on knowledge acquired from other experts in a specific domain.

In the 1990s there was significant growth throughout many industries including medical diagnosis, manufacturing, telecommunications, and stock markets analysis.

Elements Of Artificial Intelligence

There are many deep technologies—machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision,…A.I.

Artificially intelligent systems have gained a lot of popularity lately with the development of Deep Learning and neural networks, for which you can thank computer giants such as Google, Facebook, and Microsoft.

There are three key elements that makeup A.I:

Machine Learning:

machine learning

Although machines are computers, they can only be programmed (or “learned”) to do what they were explicitly programmed to do. Instead of programming, you can teach them, for example, they can “learn” patterns of data. Machine Learning, or ML for short, makes use of computational power to analyze large amounts of data in order to find patterns that humans might have missed.

ML can be used in many fields and is most common in the context of big data analysis and predictive modeling. One such area is the field of law enforcement, where it can track criminals based on their pattern of crime events.

We will talk more about ML in detail in our upcoming blog post. So stay tuned with us for more such posts and articles.

Deep Learning :

deep learning

Deep learning (DL) is a branch of machine learning based on a set of algorithms that attempt to model high-level abstractions in data by using a deep neural network. The term “deep”, in this context, refers to the number of hidden layers within the network.

In recent years, Deep Learning breakthroughs have propelled many applications into the realm of achievements once thought to be only possible with human intelligence. Deep learning is an essential tool for the modern AI industry‪, with more and more real-world applications being built at scale.

Artificial neural networks:

artificial neural networks

The artificial neural network (ANN) is a computational model based on the ideas of the brain that uses an algorithmic framework to try and implement aspects of the human brain in an effort to establish intelligent behavior.

Artificial Neural Networks allow a computer to process data by utilizing computational models comparable to the neural networks in a brain. This technique, which falls under machine learning, solves problems more complex than would be otherwise possible by programming alone.

Computer Vision:

computer vision

Computer vision (also known as video analysis, computer video analysis, and image processing) is a field of research incorporating methods from both artificial intelligence and computer science.

It can be used to analyze and understand images and videos. Computer vision may be mainly applied in the fields of human-computer interaction, Web content extraction, and video surveillance

Computer vision aims to understand things like people’s gestures, emotions, topics of discussion in face-to-face conversations, smart home environments, or automobile controls while browsing Web content.

Natural Language Processing:

natural language processing

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a type of computer science for understanding and processing human language, in particular, text. NLP methods are deep, domain-specific sciences that draw on this diverse background of academic research. There are many types of linguistic phenomena that cannot be processed with existing tools or surveys in one area of computational linguistics.

How Does Artificial Intelligence Work?

Artificial intelligence working

As the hype around “Artificial Intelligence” has increased, vendors have been racing to present how their products use AI. Often what they term AI is simply “machine learning” but some terms, such as “Artificial Intelligence,” are also used to mean computer programs that teach themselves. One component of AI is “deep learning” or machine learning, sometimes called “deep learning.” In order to use

According to the traditional view, A.I. systems work by taking a close look at the large amounts of labeled data and determining how much training data can be used to make predictive judgments about future states. In the case of text chats and images, the systems ingest and “eat” large amounts of data to learn.

AI systems can be used to deliver the three main functions of cognitive capacity: learning, reasoning, and self-correction.

Learning processes: involve the acquisition of data and the creation of rules used to take the data and convert it into information that can be acted upon. The rules, which are called algorithms, provide computers with step-by-step information on how to perform a specific job

Reasoning processes: This aspect of AI is concerned with choosing an appropriate algorithm to reach a goal.

Self-correcting algorithm: When a computer learns and is asked by a human, the computer is able to correct itself.

Types Of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence can be classified into three categories based on what it can and cannot do. They are strong, weak, and super. To learn how and why you need not be concerned about the same technology. Let’s look at their types.

Artificial Narrow Intelligence:

Artificial narrow intelligence (ANI) is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) that encompasses those systems that mimic and replicate certain human behaviors. It is the internal logic or program that is able to run an algorithm.

Artificial General Intelligence:

Artificial general intelligence (AGI) is an engineering and scientific field concerning the construction of intelligent machines that resemble the cognitive capacity of humans, and also the technology necessary to produce such machines.

Aritificial Super Intelligence:

A machine or computer system that mimics cognitive functions of the human brain or that has abilities greater than those found in humans is considered an artificial superintelligence system. Artificial superintelligence will bring about a fundamental revolution in the pursuit of intellectual goals.

Applications Of Artificial Intelligence

Application Of Ai

Most of us interact with Ai systems, even though we aren’t aware of it. Let me show you some of the Ai applications in our daily life.

Chatbots:

Nowadays thanks to the development of Artificial Intelligence in the IT field, many different tasks can be automated which are usually done by humans. Chatbots substituted a lot of menial household jobs so that people can focus on creativity and management. Most importantly this automation takes place without restrictions of working hours or location like telesales agents do.
